Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
