Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
